About Us
Heart Meets Engineering
Twenty five years of making the impossible possible in Adelaide
A Unique Start
Mark Fraser is not a typical driving instructor. His career did not begin with standard learners but with building rally vehicles and competing in motor sport events. While seeking professional qualifications to teach rally drivers, he realised his mechanical engineering problem solving and defensive driving expertise were better suited to helping people for whom driving is genuinely difficult.
Finding a knack. Early in his career, Mark discovered a natural ability to support people who struggled with the standard driving process. Whether it was the patience developed from building cars or the motor sport background helping him dissect complex manoeuvres, he found he could reach the learners some other instructors had given up on. Twenty five years later, the vast majority of our clients are overcoming physical disabilities, or cognitive challenges.
Crafting Bespoke Solutions
Mark possesses a personal workshop in Brahma Lodge dedicated to prototyping custom vehicle modifications. When a standard, commercially available modification fails to meet a client’s specific physical needs, Mark builds a solution that does. This combination of motor sport know-how and adaptive instruction means that if there is a technical way to make driving work for you, we will find it.
Reclaiming your agency. In a car-dependent city like Adelaide, transport independence is the key to a dignified life. Without a licence, you are often at the mercy of others’ schedules, which erodes your sense of agency and limits your career and social opportunities. We do our best to accommodate your needs because we believe this is grassroots inclusion that matters.
The Motor Sport Edge: How Racing Expertise Improves Instruction
Anticipation and precision. Motor racing is not about speed: it is about reading the road and maintaining composure under extreme pressure. These professional skills translate directly to specialised driver training.
Defensive Driving
Mark teaches you to read traffic patterns and position your vehicle safely, compensating for slower reaction times.
Breaking Down Complexity
We dissect complex driving tasks into component parts, making them manageable for those with cognitive processing differences.
Calm Under Pressure
Motor sport requires absolute steady calm, a quality that is essential when working with highly anxious learners or PTSD survivors.
Safety Systems
Our training vehicles are equipped with professional-grade dual control brakes, ensuring mistakes never become dangerous.

Independence is a Right: Disability should not determine life outcomes. Everyone deserves the dignity of independent mobility.
Time is not Pressure: If you need two years to build the neural pathways required for safe driving, we will stay with you.
Genuine Inclusion: Real access requires technical capability and heart, not just lip service to bureaucracy.
Transparency Builds Trust: We are honest about costs and the complexities of third-party funding to ensure there are no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are you a registered NDIS provider?
A: Private specialist service. We are not a registered NDIS provider, but we regularly support NDIS participants to get their licence.
Why do you no longer offer standard lessons?
A: A dedicated focus. We have shifted our business to focus 100 per cent on high-stakes clinical and technical mobility. This ensures our modified vehicles and Mark’s expertise are available for the clients whom other schools cannot help.
Are there other Drive Smart schools?
A: Independent and local. While a couple of other schools share the name interstate, we are an independent, Adelaide-based operation. We were the second Drive Smart ever established and remain dedicated to the South Australian community. It seems Drive Smart is a popular name for quality driving schools 🙂
