A Unique Start
Mark Fraser is not a typical driving instructor. Coming from a defence manufacturing background, his career did not begin with standard learners but with building rally vehicles and competing in motor sport events. While seeking professional qualifications to teach rally drivers, he realised his mechanical problem solving and defensive driving expertise were better suited to helping people for whom driving is genuinely difficult.
Finding a knack. Early in his career, Mark discovered a natural ability to support people who struggled with the standard driving process. Whether it was the patience developed from building cars or the motor sport background helping him dissect complex manoeuvres, he found he could reach the learners other instructors had given up on. Twenty five years later, the vast majority of our clients are overcoming physical disabilities or cognitive challenges.
Crafting Bespoke Solutions
Defence grade precision in the workshop
Bespoke technical solutions. Mark possesses a small personal workshop in Brahma Lodge dedicated to prototyping custom vehicle modifications. This personal space enables Mark to combine his lifelong passion for mechanics, technical problem solving, and driving.
Defence technology foundation
Mark’s early career. Mark began his technical career as a fitter and machinist, including programming CNC machinery to manufacture metal components to strict tolerances. Starting his defence industry journey at Fairey Australasia in Holden Hill (which evolved into AWA Defense and later BAE Systems), Mark was part of the original team that manufactured, developed, and tested South Australia’s very first speed cameras (no hate mail please).
High precision technology transfer
To the UK and back. As an electro-optical technician working on the Collins Class submarine project in the 1990s, Mark travelled to the United Kingdom for an official technology transfer. He brought advanced assembly, alignment, and calibration methods back to Australia, physically installing and commissioning periscope systems under heavy defence auditing scrutiny. His work extended to weapons guidance, infrared, and laser systems for military aircraft.
Continuous improvement mindset
From sport to Australian Design Rules. Mark first translated this extreme defence precision to motorsport, continually analysing vehicle performance to find incremental gains. Today, he brings that exact same technology transfer mindset, hands-on mechanical understanding, and continuous improvement protocol to adaptive vehicle modifications. When a standard, commercially available modification fails to meet your specific physical needs, Mark uses his workshop to prototype a custom solution that puts you safely back in control. These prototype concept designs are then passed on to the team who will be modifying your vehicle ensuring Australian Design Rules are met.

Mark brings more than 25 years of professional experience to every lesson. He is a South Australian Accredited Motor Driving Instructor with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. He is one of only a few instructors in Adelaide equipped to work with high-level modified controls and clinical driving needs.
Jenny Fraser. Administration and Logistics.
Jenny manages our office operations and finance. She understands that Mark will not give up on anyone and provides critical emotional support for families navigating the re-licensing roadmap. Jenny behind the scenes coordination makes it possible for Mark to do what he does.

Are you a registered NDIS provider?
A: Private specialist service. We are not a registered NDIS provider, but we regularly support NDIS participants to get their licence.
Why do you no longer offer standard lessons?
A: A dedicated focus. We have shifted our business to focus 100 per cent on high-stakes clinical and technical mobility. This ensures our modified vehicles and Mark’s expertise are available for the clients whom other schools cannot help.
Are there other Drive Smart schools?
A: Independent and local. While a couple of other schools share the name interstate, we are an independent, Adelaide-based operation. We were the second Drive Smart ever established and remain dedicated to the South Australian community. It seems Drive Smart is a popular name for quality driving schools 🙂
